Description : |
Jim Soaman and George Hailstone carting grapes at Pirraminna Winery, McLaren Vale. The McLaren Vale lies about 50 kilometres south of Adelaide and is one of South Australia's premier wine-producing regions. Some of the oldest vineyards in the region include Pirramimma, established by Alexander Campbell Johnston in 1892 and still run by the Johnston family and Hardy's Tintara vineyard. Tintara was founded by Dr Charles Alexander Kelly, one of Australia's early writers on wine and a believer in its medicinal properties, and the vineyards were bought by Thomas Hardy in 1876. The main grape varieties grown in the McLaren Vale are shiraz, grenache and chardonnay. |
