Description : |
The board for this Boer War game, with its counter-clockwise trail is attractively illustrated. It shows an Australian stockman mustering cattle, a mounted troop riding to the embarkation, watched by a number of onlookers, the transport ship SS Medic accompanied from the port by a large flotilla of yachts, and a battle scene. There are also scenes of a field hospital, and a field prison. A Along the game the player undergoes a riding test, which he may fail, is supplied with a uniform, receives promotion, is wounded, has his horse killed from under him or is taken prisoner. The game concludes with the Union flag flying proudly over the Parliament buildings. The Australian Bushmen Game was a one of a number of games produced for children in response to the intense patriotism engendered by war in the early 20 th century. Later conflicts would also receive this attention. Through the game they could learn and share in some degree the difficulties the soldiers experienced as they fought for the honour of their country and the Empire. |
