In a pre-electronic era, leaflets and posters were used extensively by the Australian Government to rally public support for involvement in the war, and recruit men to military service. Emotive text and images were employed to influence public opinion and strengthen patriotism.

In the First World War, all who served in the Australian Imperial Force were volunteers who enlisted of their own volition, or responded to the recruiting drives. Initially, large numbers volunteered for war service but massive casualties at the Front resulted in the need for recruitment drives.

Referendums about the issue of conscription held on 28 October 1916 and again on 20 December 1917 were both defeated, particularly in South Australia. The total number of more than 34,500 volunteers in South Australia comprised 38 per cent of the state's men aged 18-44 years - approximately one ninth of the Australian forces.
