Photograph taken during the Gallipoli campaign of a 'sap' (a deep narrow trench constructed to approach an enemy's position), with several soldiers sitting in the trench. The original caption reads 'A "T" Sap, Walker's Ridge.' (1915). This photograph is included in the papers of Captain Thomas Woolmer English, a member of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.
Australian troops first landed at the Gallipoli peninsula on 25 April 1915. Fighting on steep terrain, the Allies attempted to break through the strongly defended Turkish lines. A stalemate persisted in the following nine months, and Australian troops were evacuated 19-20 December. With over 8,000 deaths and 26,000 casualties, the Gallipoli campaign had a profound effect on Australian society. |
