Description : |
Sturt concludes his letter to his friend John Morphett. James Poole has returned from an advance party and reports seeing a vast area of sea: Sturt will be able to sail the boat upon it and explore the interior. Edward Eyre returns to his concluding remarks in his account of his explorations. He considers that until Sturt returns from his expedition and can confirm the discovery of the inland sea that he, Eyre, still believes an inland sea is unlikely, despite his respect and friendship for Sturt. Unfortunately James Poole had been fooled by a mirage, just as Eyre himself had been fooled by mirage and heat haze into believing that a great horseshoe shaped salt lake barred his progress to the north of South Australia. There were many salt lakes, but there were paths between them. It would take until 1858 to show this. And it would be more years again before the inland sea was finally disproven once and for all. |
