Description : |
View a "zoomable" version. This map shows the routes of both Stuart's fourth (1860) and fifth (1860-61) expeditions and runs from 24 degrees north to 18 degrees. There are numerous notes regarding the type of country passed over: spinifex, no water, gum tree plain, good grass scrub, sandy soil etc. Attack Creek (18 degrees), just north of Kekwick's Ponds is the place where Stuart's fourth expedition was confronted by the traditional owners of the land. The map is annotated to reflect this encounter. From this point on his fifth expedition, Stuart was entering previously unexplored territory. The Aboriginal people attacked Stuart's party because of the encroachment he and his thirsty horses made upon the scant water resources. Stuart and his men were greatly outnumbered and this, together with incipient scurvy, short supplies and water shortages compelled Stuart to turn back. He would try again later that same year. Central to the map is Central Mount Stuart, which Stuart had named Central Mount Sturt, but which the South Australian government renamed in his honour. |
