Description :
August Kavel was born in Berlin in 1798 and became Lutheran pastor of Zullichau in Brandenberg. From 1817 the Kaiser of Prussia attempted to unify the Lutherans and Calvinists by creating a state church. Kavel disagreed strongly with these moves. In 1835 he travelled to Hamburg in search of means for himself and almost 200 other 'Old Lutherans' to immigrate to America in search of freedom of religious worship. However, here he heard of the English Baptist George Fife Angas and his connections with the experimental colony of South Australia. Eventually Angas provided the financial backing for the group to settle in South Australia and establish a community near Adelaide at Klemzig. Others followed and eventually the German Lutherans settled in the Barossa Valley. Pastor Kavel died in 1860.
