Description :

The lighthouse at Cape Borda was erected in 1858 on Kangaroo Island. This is the only square stone tower in Australia. While the tower itself is only 10 metres high it is placed on towering cliffs 155 metres high. Situated at the western end of Kangaroo Island it was originally known as the Flinders Light. Provisions for the lighthouse keepers were landed at the nearby Harveys Return and hauled up the steep path on a railway. The light was originally red and white alternately, with the white light visible 30 miles. The light was demanned and automated in 1989.

The 150th anniversary of the lighthouse will be celebrated over the weekend of 4 October 2008. A festival of food and a special wine-bottling have been arranged by the organisers.

Because of the steep rocky nature of Kangaroo Island and with its remoteness Cape Borda and its lighthouse keepers have featured in a number of dramatic shipwrecks, including the Loch Sloy in 1889. A keeper's child has also been lost over the steep cliffs.
