Description : |
The front page of the Advertiser proclaiming North Adelaide as 'Cock O'Australia' after they won the Championship of Australia football tournament held at Adelaide Oval over the weekend of 14-15 October 1972. The tournament was played between the premiers of the South Australian National Football League (North), the Victorian Football League (Carlton), the Western Australia Football League (East Perth) and the Tasmanian premiers (City South). The headline is a play on North's nickname of the Roosters. In the games on Saturday, 14 October, North defeated City-South by 69 points and Carlton beat East Perth by 51 points. The final on Sunday, 15 October, between North and Carlton was a tight affair with North finding themselves 11 points behind early in the last quarter and kicking into a stong wind. Through dogged defence and goals to Dennis Sachse and Darryl Webb North hit the front at the 17 minute mark and then held on for a famous victory. The final score being North 10 goals 13 behinds, 73 points, Carlton 10 goals 12 behinds, 72 points. North players that day included Barrie Robran, Barry Stringer, Bob Hammond, John Spry, Barry Hearl, Terry Von Bertouch, Adrian Rebbeck, Neil Sachse, Bohdan Jaworskyj, Alan Howard, Garry Sporn, Geoff Paull and were coached by Mike Patterson. Carlton featured players such as Alex Jesaulenko, Syd Jackson, Robert Walls and John Nicholls who was also coach. |
