Description : |
Jetty at Penneshaw, Hog Bay, with the SS Karatta moored at the Jetty. A jetty was built at Penneshaw in 1902, after lengthy petitioning of the government. Originally 105 metres long it was lengthened and strengthened several years later and an 'L' head created which provided greater protection from wind and wave action. Repairs and improvements were made to the jetty in 1953. The Karatta called at Penneshaw as part of its Kangaroo Island service which commenced in 1907, but otherwise as elsewhere on the island, the small port was served well enough by the fleet of ketches. After the ro-ro vessel Troubridge began operations between Port Adelaide and Kingscote the use of Hog Bay jetty declined, although ketches still handled some of the island's trade. From 1995 the ferry to the island has operated between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw and is run by Kangaroo Island Sealink. The jetty has resumed its importance. |
