Description : |
Obituary of Albert Augustine (Bert) Edwards who died on 24 August 1963. Known as the King of the West End, Edwards had been Labor Member of Parliament for Adelaide from 1917 until 1931 when he was convicted of having committed an unnatural offence and received a five year gaol sentence. After his release Edwards was expelled from the Labor Party but was re-elected to Adelaide City Council in 1948, remaining a Councillor until his death. At the time of his death, Premier, Sir Thomas Playford, said, "Scarcely a good cause in the city did not receive some help from him ... many of his kindest actions were done anonymously." |
