Description : |
Cover of pamphlet containing a reprint of an article published in the Register newspaper to mark Catherine Helen Spence's 80th birthday. Supported by Jeanne Young and Miss Gregory, Catherine Spence hosted a birthday reception at the Unitarian Lecture Hall in Wakefield Street, attended by more than 200 guests including the Chief Justice and Lady Way, Lady Bonython, the Chief Secretary, Robert Kyffin Thomas and the President of the State Children's Council. The Register commented, 'Miss Spence will long be remembered for her sincerity as a reformer, her large-hearted sympathy, and the genuine interest which she has evinced in all matters relating to political and social progress.' In acknowledging the good wishes of the guests Spence commented, I am a new woman, and I know it. I mean an awakened woman, to use the phrase of Miss Lilian Mead - awakened to a sense of capacity and responsibility, not merely to the family and the household, but to the state; to be wise, not for her own selfish interests, but that the World may be glad that she was born. |
