The Premier of South Australia, Sir Thomas Playford officially inaugurated the new town of Elizabeth on 16 November 1955.
Under the Playford Government, the South Australian Housing Trust was formed in 1936 and was the first state housing authority in Australia. In the 1950s the Housing Trust purchased 3,000 acres of land 23 kilometres north of Adelaide on which the planned satellite town of Elizabeth was built to alleviate a housing shortage and assist the State's economic development. The Housing Trust created a thousand homes a year as it worked towards accommodating population of 25,000 people. Thousands of migrants - including many British migrants referred to as 'Ten pound Poms' - settled in Elizabeth, helping to build the state's manufacturing base. |
