Description :

Crayon drawing by 13 year old Amanyi, collected at Ernabella by CP Mountford during the Adelaide University Anthropological Expedition to Central Australia in 1940.

During this Expedition, Mountford spent a month or so at the Ernabella Mission prior to his outward trips, where he made time to collect crayon drawings from the children. Each morning he would take brown paper and crayons across to the school, where he had arranged with the school teacher, Ron Trudinger, for the children to draw. Approximately 380 drawings were made by Pitjantjatjara children aged between four and 15 years, and Mountford felt very strongly that they might represent the last of such traditional influence amongst these children, who had begun 'formal' school education (Brown Men and Red Sand, pp. 31-32).

The tradition of producing artwork has continued in this region with the world renowned Ernabella Arts Centre.
