Description : |
Captain Chapman James Clare, KCMG, Commander of H.M.C.S. Protector during its Boxer Rebellion service in China Captain Chapman James Clare, KCMG, Commander of HMCS Protector during its Boxer Rebellion service in China. When WR Cresswell resigned in 1900 to take up the position of Naval Commandant in Queensland, Lieutenant Commander CJ Clare was promoted to become Commandant of the South Australian Navy, and in December 1900 was promoted to Captain. Shortly after this HMCS Protector was offered to serve in China with the British Navy during the Boxer Rebellion. The South Australian government resisted the British demand that the ship be manned by a British crew and Cresswell as a former Royal Navy officer was placed in command as an acceptable compromise. Clare served as his executive officer. CJ Clare later served as district naval officer in Western Australia and in the same position in South Austrralia from 1918 until he retired in July 1919. |
