The Observer carries a report from the Melbourne Age newspaper which expresses dissatisfaction with the manner in which the Melbourne Admella committee has distributed rewards to the crews of the lifeboat and the whaleboat involved in the Admella rescue. There appeared to be some misappropration of funds.

The Adelaide committee had used the money it raised throughout South Australia for the relief of the survivors as its priority. Following that distribution money was passed on to the rescuers, topping up the money collected in Victoria. In Melbourne a medal was struck for presentation to the rescuers. A marble memorial tablet was set up initially at the Customs House, later at the Sailors' Home. (It is now held at the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre.) They also commissioned an official account of the wreck of the Admella which was written by Samuel Mossman.

Ten per cent of the money collected was awarded to the lifeboat and whaleboat crews who attended the wreck. Of this 100 pounds was awarded to Captain Fawthrop of the lifeboat who was after all a government employee: his crew in total received only 87 pounds 10 shillings in comparison. This sum was increased by a contribution coming from the Adelaide committee.

The Melbourne Sailors Home was built; it received 470 pounds from the Melbourne Admella Fund, the rest of the required amount for its building coming from other sources.
