Description : |
Camels carrying packs and water for the party of a South Australian Government expedition sent to the Simpson Desert to search for possible remains of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. The expedition was mounted to examine relics found near Mount Dare Station by station owner Edwin Lowe. During the expedition the party used horses, camels, a motor car and truck to traverse the gibber plains and sandy desert. Members were given the choice between riding a horse or a camel. In an article written before the party's departure, Lowe and Grenfell Price indicated that they would ride a horse, Mountford a camel, and Smith and Fenner were undecided. Whilst Mountford indicated he preferred riding camels to horses, he was no great fan of the animal...
Camels have been used to assist inland exploration in Australia since 1840. |
